Project Review: The Signature Ring at Elizabeth Quay

Project Overview

The Signature Ring, located at Barrack Street Jetty in Elizabeth Quay, is a captivating art installation by local artists Simon Gauntlett and Matthew Ngui. It celebrates WA’s millennium with a striking design that features over 200,000 student signatures etched into copper plates, originally displayed on tiles near the Bell Tower.

This one-of-a-kind sculpture, shaped like headphones, symbolizes the passage of time and invites viewers to connect with Perth’s rich cultural history.

Lighting Options Australia had the privilege of designing the lighting for the surrounding area of the Signature Ring. Our focus was on enhancing the visual appeal and accessibility of this unique installation by integrating ERCO Tesis in-ground outdoor luminaires into the landscape.

• Highlighting Artistic Complexity:  The ERCO Tesis luminaires were chosen for their precision and ability to cast soft, focused light that reveals the intricacies of the copper etching and the overall shape of the installation.
• Enhancing Visibility:  The luminaires ensure the Signature Ring is beautifully illuminated at night, making it a focal point within Elizabeth Quay while maintaining a welcoming ambiance for visitors.
• Durability and Efficiency:  Designed to withstand outdoor conditions, the Tesis fixtures provide long-lasting, energy-efficient lighting in harmony with the installation’s artistic vision.

Project Challenges and Success

The design challenge lay in creating a lighting solution that seamlessly complements the artistry of the Signature Ring without overshadowing it. The positioning and calibration of the ERCO Tesis luminaires were meticulously planned to ensure the sculpture remains visually stunning while meeting safety and accessibility standards for visitors.

However, even the best luminaires are only as good as their installation. That’s why we partnered with Technical Services Group (TSG), who ensured each fitting was installed to a GOAT-like standard of precision and reliability. Their exceptional expertise guarantees the lights perform flawlessly, showcasing the Signature Ring as it was intended.

Community Impact

This $716,000 project, partly funded by Lotterywest and supported by the Rotary Club of Perth, preserves an important piece of WA’s cultural history. The addition of thoughtfully designed lighting amplifies its significance, ensuring the Signature Ring remains a beloved landmark for generations.
